FANUC, a global leader in industrial automation, moved its Iberia headquarters to Sant Cugat del Vallès (Barcelona). It had an intimidating 9,000 m2 that it needed to imbue with the essence of the brand, transmitting its values and creating a pleasant corporate atmosphere.

How to decode the company’s DNA so that it was reflected in the spaces?

Obviously, we had a major component to take into account, namely the company’s origins and roots in Japanese culture. FANUC City is located at the foot of Mount Fuji, near Lake Yamanaka in Japan. Covering an area of 1.7 million m2, it houses all of FANUC’s production facilities.

After studying Japanese architectural trends, we were inspired by a concept which, like so many others, did not have a literal translation into Spanish, but whose meaning was profound and inspiring.

Lights and shadows

The essence of komorebi lies in the interplay of sunlight filtering through the leaves of the trees and creating a dance of light and shadow. This resource, when applied to domestic architecture, generates a dynamic, living space that changes throughout the day with the movement of the sun.

Including the komorebi concept in architecture means designing with light in mind, not only as a functional necessity, but as a way of improving quality of life and emotional well-being.

From this visual resource, we created a graphic system that allowed us to give coherence to the entire design of the meeting rooms and common spaces.

We also gave them names based on Japanese concepts.

For the different spaces’ signage, we carried out a needs study and designed a modular system so that all the signs would follow the same graphic lines. We selected the different materials taking into account aspects such as exposure to friction, use and purpose, sun exposure, etc.

We had the privilege of organising the inaugural event for the new headquarters of the prestigious Japanese company – FANUC Iberia, a world leader in the manufacture of industrial automation – in Sant Cugat del Vallès (Barcelona). For three consecutive days, we welcomed a total of 600 industry professionals to an event that marked the beginning of a new era for the multinational.
